Dumbfounded. That was my state of mind throughout the 45mins of visual playing before my eyes. My mind refused to believe that any human being is capable of showing not only the complete absence of even an ounce of remorse for the monstrosity he had perpetrated but also an absolutely cheerful pride in what he had done. "No one claps with one hand." "A girl is more responsible than a guy is." "We were simply teaching them a lesson. For fighting back."
Lesson for fighting back. Coz that's what India does. People are in hurry all the time. In buses, trains, even on airports. Yet if someone even accidentally causes a bump or a scrape, people suddenly break free of their precious time (and many a times even space) constraints and don't rest until the perpetrator has taken the full force of their fury. Obviously, we can't let it go. No one shall go unpunished. People ought to pay.
An accidental bump hurts so much. What about such a brazen and deliberate attack on a girl's modesty? An attack so brutal that it wiped her out from the face of humanity in less than a fortnight? An attack which was such a slap on everyone's face that it drove us to question our very place in society - where are we? The massive outrage, the collective cry of shock and disgust reverberated throughout India, leading to a chargesheet being filed in less than 20 days and a court order issued in less than 3 months.
Yet, i fail to understand exactly what has changed. The callousness of the convicts, their families (especially the spouses) towards the degree of heinousness of the former's crime appalled me so much that i was forced to wonder if these people are in their right minds.
A spouse, who refuses to believe that her husband's guilty, puts on display at her helplessness at being left alone as the sole caretaker of her child - i shiver to imagine how she can think of letting such an animalistic character near her. His gang damaged two people part by part, left them bleeding in the middle of the road and show absolutely no remorse at the barbarian nature of their crime.
The video is a slap on the face of authority who lets such monsters roam around our streets... Free of the fear of consequences and of the moral responsibility of committing a crime. Our government, which is hellbent spending such copious amounts of time and energy on banning this video...as n their "the comments of the convict are highly derogatory and affront the dignity of the women." YES THEY ARE! BUT THAT SURE AS HELL doesn't change the fact that he actually had the guts to make this shameless display of idiocy. What purpose doe the banning of the video serve??? It took a foreign national and a foreign channel to take the courage to reveal the truth of a system that refuses to give way to change - whether in terms of safety of women or the punishment to the guilty - and to expose the hypocrisy sitting inside the minds of our society. Lawyers publicly admitting the possible murder of their daughters in case they bring shame to their family and happily stating that women have no place in our society. I could not decide whether i should be more outraged at this shameless display of chauvinism or at the alarming insensitivity with which some dozen people refused to touch (let alone help) the profusely bleeding couple in the middle of the road while a single person was trying to call up medical help and searching for something to cover them up.
Change. Desperately needed. In the mindsets of people. In the attitudes of authority. In the speed of delivery.... Of judgment as well as punishment. Letting this all go would be like burying our heads in the sand....which is what we always do.
